Volunteering & Serving a Retreat
Serving while in India
Service towards others with a tolerant, peaceful mind helps us to open our hearts. Volunteering gives you the opportunity to give metta (feelings of lovingkindness) for each student, the retreat, the food, and your experience. You gain excellent "paramis" (good karmas) as you put aside your life and assist in the selfless transformation of others. You also get to share your awesomeness with the retreat (and future center), whether it's in permaculture, leadership, cooking, teaching supplementary courses, building, and more.
"The depth and the willingness with which we serve is
a direct reflection of our gratitude."
-Gordon T. Watts
Due to the delicate nature of our 10-day retreats, volunteers for 10-day Vipassana Retreats are typically requested to remain in the course from beginning to end, so as to be in the energy and experience of the entire course with each student and teacher. At a minimum, a volunteer is encouraged to remain on the campus 3 to 5 days, to assist in the beginning portion of each retreat, which is the most delicate time period.
Vipassana Volunteer Requirements
We need volunteers to hold space during each retreat. Sometimes it's just one students, sometimes two or more.
If you desire serving a course, each volunteer must have taken a minimum of one 10-day course (from VNW, SN Goenka's organization, or Sayagyi U Ba Khin's Organization) prior to volunteering. Sitting 2 courses and having meditated Vipassana for at least one year is ideal. If this requirement is not met, then the volunteer oftentimes finds themself releasing so much that they are incapable of handling their duties during the retreat. So we ask you to be sincere about your desire to help prior to asking about volunteer openings.
Long-term volunteer positions are sometimes needed, so please inquire. Once our designated year-round retreat center is fully operational, we will entertain many of the applicant's desires for long-term volunteering.
Duties Volunteers Fulfill
Each retreat's needs are shared with each potential volunteer during an opening phone call. We also enjoy hearing your vision for sharing your love and talent with us.
